A host of traditional and cabaret games are on display for visitors to watch or play: skittles, javelin, crossage, Frisian handball, greasy pole, card games, trou-madame (variety of bagatelle), cabaret or outdoor games, etc.
Played exclusively in Tournai, jeu de fer ("Tournai billiards") is one of the best-known local games. It can still be found in many of the city’s cafés. This game is reminiscent of billiards and pétanque: players have to concentrate and work hard to master the board, avoid obstacles and use a cue to send the pucks as close as possible to the last pin. The MuFIm has both an old and a new table for beginners and experienced players.
Children’s toys and board games offer endless opportunities to marvel, share stories and childhood memories, and escape into an imaginary world. Reflecting society in miniature and the ideologies of their time, they also highlight certain social dynamics and how they have changed: the doll’s tea set for little girls, soldiers for little boys, magic lantern panels conveying colonial ideas, health education, tourist depictions and more. There are many possible interpretations available to visitors.
