The muFIm

Nestled just a stone’s throw from Tournai’s Grand-Place, in a building with two 16th-century façades, the Museum of Folklore and Imagination (MuFIm) welcomes you on a surprising historical journey from the 19th century to the present day.

Take a seat in Roméo Dumoulin’s hot-air balloon and fly over the city of Tournai and the surrounding area. The plan-relief, a huge scale model of the city in the time of Louis XIV, is one of the iconic pieces in this museum of regional history and ethnography. As you move through the rooms, you’ll be introduced to the crafts of yesteryear: from Louis Spinette, the chip shop owner pushing his handcart in the 1910s, to François-Joseph Peterinck, founder of the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Tournai. With family or friends, you can talk about lifestyles past and present, including work, family, leisure, school and more. Were things better before? Really?

Along the way, artistic works and current testimonies touch upon contemporary themes to broaden our knowledge and encourage us to take a moment to observe, listen and reflect.

Throughout the year, the MuFIm offers a programme of activities to enhance your experience of the permanent exhibition, including family activities, workshops, courses, lectures, temporary and contemporary art exhibitions, guided tours, etc.
